 - END OF YEAR AUDITION INFORMATION (Final Project) I am thrilled that you want to be part of the Veterans Memorial High School Choral Department for the 2020-2021 School year.  The VMHS Choral Department offers a variety of ensembles for students based on their prior knowledge and ability level.  Please note, the audition/final project is due for all students currently enrolled in choir for 2019-2020 as part of your distance learning grades.  Seniors only need to do a recording of Ubi Caritas whereas all other students will need to submit all three portions of the audition.

Audition Instructions
  • All auditions will be submitted online
  • You will submit 3 Recordings. 1.  Recording of Ubi Caritas, 2.  A recording of your vocal range, 3.  Sight-reading.  Ubi Caritas will be submitted through SmartMusic.  Your range assessment and sight reading will be submitted through google classroom.
Vocal Range Assessment
  1. Say your name and grade
  2. Beginning on G (Call this Do) sing down the scale to your lowest note (Do Ti La So Fa Mi, etc…). You may sing on solfege or a neutral vowel of your choice.
  3. Beginning on G (Call this Do) sing up to your highest note: Do Re Mi Fa So, etc… Gentlemen, it is ok and advisable to switch into head voice to demonstrate your vocal abilities in your upper range.

Vocal Performance Assessment
  1. Learn and sing Ubi Caritas in Smart Music.
  2. There are practice assignments to help you learn the piece as well as an assignment for your audition.

Sight Reading Assessment - On the left you will find a document with sight-reading samples.  I will choose one example from each of this document to be your final sight-reading for your audition, so it would be beneficial to you to work on each of them.
  1. Press Record on your Computer/Tablet/Phone then please state your name and read the exercise title before pressing play on the SR Audition Track.
  2. The recording will say “You may now look at your sight-reading exercise” and the tonic chord Do Mi So Mi Do So Do will be played followed by the first note of the exercise; this is considered your study period. You may sing, chant, and/or audiate during your study time. You may not play the melody on any device. You will have 30 seconds to study the melody.
  3. At the completion of study period the recording will play the tonic chord again, Do Mi So Mi Do So Do, followed by the first note of the exercise (you may sing with it).
  4. Sing the exercise using solfege and hand signs at a tempo of your choice. If you are unable to sing using solfege, you may use a neutral syllable of your choice, however, your knowledge of solfege will be considered in your audition.

All videos should be submitted to the appropriate grade drop box on google classroom by Friday, May 8th at 11:59PM.  If you encounter any problems or have questions, please contact Mr. Moody immediately.
